Adem\u00e1s, los medios sociales dependen de las tecnolog\u00edas m\u00f3viles y basadas en la web para crear plataformas altamente interactivas a trav\u00e9s de las cuales individuos y comunidades comparten, cocrean, debaten y modifican contenidos generados por los usuarios. Introducen cambios sustanciales y generalizados en la comunicaci\u00f3n entre empresas, organizaciones, comunidades e individuos. En estos cambios se centra el campo emergente de los estudios sobre el tecnoselfismo. Los medios sociales se diferencian de los medios tradicionales o industriales en muchos aspectos, como la calidad, el alcance, la frecuencia, la facilidad de uso, la inmediatez y la permanencia. Son muchos los efectos derivados del uso de Internet. Seg\u00fan Nielsen, los internautas siguen dedicando m\u00e1s tiempo a los sitios de medios sociales que a cualquier otro tipo de sitio. Al mismo tiempo, el tiempo total dedicado a los medios sociales en Estados Unidos a trav\u00e9s de PC y dispositivos m\u00f3viles aument\u00f3 un 99%, hasta alcanzar los 121.000 millones de minutos en julio de 2012, frente a los 66.000 millones de minutos de julio de 2011.
