La norma promueve formatos de datos comunes en la World Wide Web. Al fomentar la inclusi\u00f3n de contenidos sem\u00e1nticos en las p\u00e1ginas web, la Web Sem\u00e1ntica pretende convertir la web actual, dominada por documentos no estructurados y semiestructurados, en una \"web de datos\". La pila de la Web Sem\u00e1ntica se basa en el Marco de Descripci\u00f3n de Recursos (RDF) del W3C. Seg\u00fan el W3C, \"la Web Sem\u00e1ntica proporciona un marco com\u00fan que permite compartir y reutilizar datos m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los l\u00edmites de la aplicaci\u00f3n, la empresa y la comunidad\".
