Una URL es un tipo espec\u00edfico de identificador uniforme de recursos (URI), aunque mucha gente utiliza los dos t\u00e9rminos indistintamente. Una URL implica los medios para acceder a un recurso indicado, lo que no es cierto para todas las URI. Las URL se utilizan sobre todo para hacer referencia a p\u00e1ginas web (http), pero tambi\u00e9n se emplean para la transferencia de archivos (ftp), el correo electr\u00f3nico (mailto), el acceso a bases de datos (JDBC) y muchas otras aplicaciones. La mayor\u00eda de los navegadores web muestran la URL de una p\u00e1gina web encima de la p\u00e1gina en una barra de direcciones.
