Het omvat de studie van de grootte, structuur en verspreiding van deze populaties en de ruimtelijke en\/of temporele veranderingen ervan in reactie op tijd, geboorte, migratie, veroudering en dood. Onderwijsinstellingen behandelen demografie meestal als een vakgebied van sociologie, hoewel er een aantal onafhankelijke demografie-afdelingen zijn.
