De meeste gerichte reclame in nieuwe media maakt momenteel gebruik van tweede-orde proxy's voor targeting, zoals het bijhouden van online of mobiele webactiviteiten van consumenten, het associ\u00ebren van historische webpagina consumenten demografie met nieuwe consumenten webpagina toegang, het gebruik van een zoekwoord als basis voor impliciete interesse, of contextuele reclame. Addressable advertising-systemen dienen advertenties rechtstreeks toe op basis van demografische, psychografische of gedragskenmerken die verband houden met de consument(en) die aan de advertentie worden blootgesteld. Deze systemen zijn altijd digitaal en moeten adresseerbaar zijn in die zin dat het eindpunt dat de advertentie serveert (settopbox, website of digitaal bord) in staat moet zijn om een advertentie onafhankelijk van andere eindpunten weer te geven op basis van consumentenattributen die specifiek zijn voor dat eindpunt op het moment dat de advertentie wordt geserveerd.
