Merkbekendheid, meestal uitgedrukt als percentage van de doelmarkt, is het primaire doel van reclame in de eerste maanden of jaren na de introductie van een product. Naamsbekendheid is gerelateerd aan de functies van merkidentiteiten in het geheugen van consumenten en kan worden weerspiegeld door hoe goed consumenten het merk onder verschillende omstandigheden kunnen identificeren. Merkbekendheid omvat merkherkenning en merkherinnering. Merkherkenning verwijst naar het vermogen van consumenten om het merk waaraan ze eerder zijn blootgesteld correct te onderscheiden. Dit betekent niet noodzakelijk dat de consument de merknaam moet herkennen. In plaats daarvan betekent het vaak dat consumenten kunnen reageren op een bepaald merk na het zien van de visuele verpakkingsafbeeldingen.
