De term kan verwijzen naar belemmeringen waarmee een bedrijf te maken krijgt als het een markt of bedrijfstak wil betreden - zoals overheidsregulering en octrooien, of een groot, gevestigd bedrijf dat profiteert van schaalvoordelen - of naar belemmeringen waarmee een individu te maken krijgt als het een beroep wil uitoefenen - zoals onderwijs- of licentie-eisen. Omdat toetredingsdrempels gevestigde bedrijven beschermen en de concurrentie op een markt beperken, kunnen ze bijdragen aan verstorende prijzen.
