Terwijl het laatste deel een boom en bust cyclus was, wordt de Internet boom soms bedoeld om te verwijzen naar de gestage commerci\u00eble groei van het Internet met de komst van het World Wide Web, zoals ge\u00efllustreerd door de eerste release van de Mosaic webbrowser in 1993, en die zich voortzette in de jaren 1990. De periode werd gekenmerkt door de oprichting (en, in veel gevallen, spectaculaire mislukking) van verschillende nieuwe internetbedrijven die gewoonlijk dot-coms worden genoemd. Bedrijven konden hun aandelenprijzen laten stijgen door simpelweg een \"e-\" voorvoegsel aan hun naam of een \".com\" aan het einde toe te voegen, wat door een auteur \"prefix investing\" werd genoemd.
