Het concept is te danken aan Dwork en Naor. Een belangrijk kenmerk van deze schema's is hun asymmetrie: het werk moet redelijk moeilijk (maar haalbaar) zijn voor de aanvrager, maar gemakkelijk te controleren voor de dienstverlener. Dit idee staat ook bekend als CPU-kostenfunctie, clientpuzzel, rekenpuzzel of CPU-prijsfunctie. Het verschilt van een CAPTCHA, die bedoeld is voor een mens om snel op te lossen, in plaats van een computer. Een populair systeem, gebruikt in Bitcoin mining en Hashcash, gebruikt gedeeltelijke hash inversies om te bewijzen dat er werk is verricht, als een teken van goede wil om een e-mail te versturen. Bijvoorbeeld de volgende header vertegenwoordigt ongeveer 252 hashberekeningen om een bericht te versturen naar calvin@comics.net op 19 januari 2038: X-Hashcash: 1:52:380119:calvin@comics.net:::9B760005E92F0DAE Het wordt geverifieerd met een enkele berekening door te controleren dat de SHA-1 hash van de postzegel (laat het \"X-Hashcash: \" gedeelte weg) begint met 52 binaire nullen, dat zijn 13 hexadecimale nullen: 0000000000000756af69e2ffbdb930261873cd71 Of POW systemen daadwerkelijk een bepaald denial-of-service probleem zoals het spam probleem kunnen oplossen is onderwerp van discussie; het systeem moet het verzenden van spam e-mails hinderlijk onproductief maken voor de spammer, maar mag ook legitieme gebruikers niet verhinderen hun berichten te verzenden.
