Voorbeelden van tekens zijn letters, cijfers, gebruikelijke leestekens (zoals \".\" of \"-\") en spaties. Het concept omvat ook controletekens, die niet overeenkomen met symbolen in een bepaalde natuurlijke taal, maar eerder met andere stukjes informatie die worden gebruikt om tekst in een of meer talen te verwerken. Voorbeelden van controletekens zijn carriage return of tab, maar ook instructies voor printers of andere apparaten die tekst weergeven of anderszins verwerken.
