Hoewel deze definitie van Merriam Webster geldig is, is er veel discussie over een meer specifieke definitie. Het proces van crowdsourcing wordt vaak gebruikt om vervelend werk op te splitsen en is ook offline met succes toegepast - zie de voorbeelden hieronder. Het combineert de inspanningen van talrijke zelf ge\u00efdentificeerde vrijwilligers of deeltijdwerkers, waarbij elke medewerker op eigen initiatief een klein deel toevoegt aan het grotere resultaat. De term \"crowdsourcing\" is een portmanteau van \"crowd\" en \"outsourcing\"; het onderscheidt zich van outsourcing doordat het werk afkomstig is van een ongedefinieerd publiek in plaats van een opdracht van een specifieke, met naam genoemde groep. Het woord \"crowdsourcing\" werd in 2005 bedacht en kan van toepassing zijn op een breed scala aan activiteiten. Crowdsourcing kan werkverdeling inhouden voor vervelende taken die worden opgesplitst om gebruik te maken van crowd-based outsourcing, maar het kan ook van toepassing zijn op specifieke verzoeken, zoals crowdfunding, een breed opgezette competitie en een algemene zoektocht naar antwoorden, oplossingen of een vermiste persoon.  Crowdtesting is een ander voorbeeld van het gebruik van de crowd om software testdiensten aan te bieden. Crowdtesting is een belangrijke speler aan het worden in de softwarewereld.
