De gevraagde informatie kan worden verstrekt in de vorm van een antwoord. Vragen hebben een reeks toepassingen ontwikkeld die verder gaan dan het eenvoudigweg ontlokken van informatie aan een andere partij. Retorische vragen, bijvoorbeeld, worden gebruikt om een punt te maken en er wordt niet verwacht dat ze beantwoord worden. Veel talen hebben speciale grammaticale vormen voor vragen (bijvoorbeeld, in de Engelse zin \"Are you happy?\", laat de omkering van het onderwerp you en het werkwoord are zien dat het een vraag is in plaats van een bewering).
