De gevoeligheid (ook wel het percentage echt positieve uitslagen genoemd, of in sommige vakgebieden het percentage herhalingen) meet het percentage echt positieve uitslagen dat correct als zodanig wordt ge\u00efdentificeerd (bijv. het percentage zieke mensen waarvan correct wordt vastgesteld dat ze de aandoening hebben), en is complementair aan het percentage fout-negatieve uitslagen. Specificiteit (soms het percentage ware negatieven genoemd) meet het percentage negatieven dat correct als zodanig wordt ge\u00efdentificeerd (bijv. het percentage gezonde mensen waarvan correct wordt vastgesteld dat ze de aandoening niet hebben) en is complementair aan het percentage vals-positieven. Een perfecte voorspeller zou beschreven worden als 100% gevoelig (bv. alle zieken worden ge\u00efdentificeerd als ziek) en 100% specifiek (bv. alle gezonde mensen worden niet ge\u00efdentificeerd als ziek); theoretisch zal elke voorspeller echter een minimale foutgrens hebben die bekend staat als de Bayes foutmarge. Voor elke test is er meestal een afweging tussen de maatregelen. In een beveiligingsomgeving op een vliegveld bijvoorbeeld, waar men test op mogelijke bedreigingen voor de veiligheid, kunnen scanners zo worden ingesteld dat ze worden geactiveerd op voorwerpen met een laag risico, zoals riemgespen en sleutels (lage specificiteit), om het risico te verkleinen dat voorwerpen worden gemist die wel een bedreiging vormen voor het vliegtuig en de mensen aan boord (hoge gevoeligheid).
