Prijsbepalende factoren zijn productiekosten, markt, concurrentie, marktomstandigheden, merk en kwaliteit van het product.  Prijszetting is ook een belangrijke variabele in de micro-economische prijstoewijzingstheorie. Prijszetting is een fundamenteel aspect van financi\u00eble modellering en is een van de vier P's van de marketingmix. (De andere drie aspecten zijn product, promotie en plaats.) Prijs is het enige inkomstengenererende element van de vier P's, de rest zijn kostenplaatsen. De andere P's van marketing zullen echter bijdragen aan het verlagen van de prijselasticiteit en zo prijsverhogingen mogelijk maken om meer omzet en winst te genereren. Prijsbepaling is het handmatige of automatische proces van het toepassen van prijzen op inkoop- en verkooporders, gebaseerd op factoren zoals: een vast bedrag, hoeveelheidsonderbreking, promotie of verkoopcampagne, specifieke leveranciersofferte, prijs die geldt bij binnenkomst, verzend- of factuurdatum, combinatie van meerdere orders of regels, en vele andere. Geautomatiseerde systemen vereisen meer instelling en onderhoud, maar kunnen prijsfouten voorkomen. De behoeften van de consument kunnen alleen worden omgezet in vraag als de consument bereid en in staat is om het product te kopen.
