Codd quando trabalhava na IBM, \u00e9 uma fam\u00edlia de \u00e1lgebras com uma sem\u00e2ntica bem fundamentada, utilizada para modelar os dados armazenados em bases de dados relacionais e definir consultas sobre os mesmos. Para organizar os dados, primeiro s\u00e3o removidos os dados redundantes e os grupos de dados que se repetem, a que chamamos normaliza\u00e7\u00e3o. Ao fazer isso, os dados s\u00e3o organizados ou normalizados no que \u00e9 chamado de primeira forma normal (1NF).   Normalmente, um modelo l\u00f3gico de dados documenta e normaliza as rela\u00e7\u00f5es entre as entidades de dados (com os seus elementos).  Uma chave prim\u00e1ria identifica de forma \u00fanica uma inst\u00e2ncia de uma entidade, tamb\u00e9m conhecida como registo. Uma vez que os dados estejam normalizados e em conjuntos de dados (entidades e tabelas), as principais opera\u00e7\u00f5es da \u00e1lgebra relacional podem ser realizadas, que s\u00e3o as opera\u00e7\u00f5es de conjunto (como uni\u00e3o, intersec\u00e7\u00e3o e produto cartesiano), sele\u00e7\u00e3o (mantendo apenas algumas linhas de uma tabela) e a proje\u00e7\u00e3o (mantendo apenas algumas colunas). As opera\u00e7\u00f5es de conjunto s\u00e3o efectuadas na instru\u00e7\u00e3o where em SQL, que \u00e9 quando um conjunto de dados est\u00e1 relacionado com outro conjunto de dados.
