Os clientes s\u00e3o geralmente classificados em dois tipos: Um cliente interm\u00e9dio ou cliente comercial (mais informalmente: \"o com\u00e9rcio\") que \u00e9 um comerciante que compra bens para revenda. Um cliente final que, por sua vez, n\u00e3o revende os bens adquiridos, mas que os transmite ao consumidor ou que \u00e9 efetivamente o consumidor. Um cliente pode ou n\u00e3o ser tamb\u00e9m um consumidor, mas as duas no\u00e7\u00f5es s\u00e3o distintas, embora os termos sejam comummente confundidos.  Um cliente adquire bens; um consumidor utiliza-os.  Um cliente final pode tamb\u00e9m ser um consumidor, mas pode igualmente ter adquirido bens para serem consumidos por outra pessoa.  Um cliente interm\u00e9dio n\u00e3o \u00e9 de todo um consumidor.  A situa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 um pouco complicada na medida em que os clientes finais dos chamados bens e servi\u00e7os industriais (que s\u00e3o entidades como organismos governamentais, fabricantes e institui\u00e7\u00f5es educativas e m\u00e9dicas) utilizam eles pr\u00f3prios os bens e servi\u00e7os que compram ou incorporam-nos noutros produtos acabados, pelo que, tecnicamente, tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o consumidores.  No entanto, raramente s\u00e3o assim designados, sendo antes designados por clientes industriais ou clientes empresa-a-empresa.  Do mesmo modo, os clientes que compram servi\u00e7os em vez de bens raramente s\u00e3o designados por consumidores. A doutrina Seis Sigma coloca os clientes (activos) em oposi\u00e7\u00e3o a duas outras classes de pessoas: os n\u00e3o-clientes e os n\u00e3o-clientes.  Enquanto os clientes lidaram ativamente com uma empresa num determinado per\u00edodo recente que depende do produto vendido, os n\u00e3o-clientes s\u00e3o clientes passados que j\u00e1 n\u00e3o s\u00e3o clientes ou potenciais clientes que optam por fazer neg\u00f3cios com a concorr\u00eancia, e os n\u00e3o-clientes s\u00e3o pessoas que est\u00e3o activas num segmento de mercado completamente diferente.  Geoff Tennant, um consultor Six Sigma do Reino Unido, utiliza a seguinte analogia para explicar a diferen\u00e7a:  Um cliente de um supermercado \u00e9 a pessoa que compra leite nesse supermercado; um n\u00e3o-cliente compra leite num supermercado concorrente, ao passo que um n\u00e3o-cliente n\u00e3o compra leite em supermercados, mas \"manda entregar o leite \u00e0 porta, \u00e0 maneira tradicional brit\u00e2nica\". Tennant tamb\u00e9m categoriza os clientes de outra forma, que \u00e9 empregue fora dos dom\u00ednios do marketing.  Enquanto a categoriza\u00e7\u00e3o interm\u00e9dia\/\u00faltima \u00e9 utilizada pelos marketeers, reguladores de mercado e economistas, no mundo do servi\u00e7o ao cliente os clientes s\u00e3o categorizados mais frequentemente em duas classes: Um cliente externo de uma organiza\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 um cliente que n\u00e3o est\u00e1 diretamente ligado a essa organiza\u00e7\u00e3o. Um cliente interno \u00e9 um cliente que est\u00e1 diretamente ligado a uma organiza\u00e7\u00e3o e \u00e9 normalmente (mas n\u00e3o necessariamente) interno \u00e0 organiza\u00e7\u00e3o.  Os clientes internos s\u00e3o normalmente partes interessadas, funcion\u00e1rios ou acionistas, mas a defini\u00e7\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m inclui credores e reguladores externos. A no\u00e7\u00e3o de cliente interno - antes da introdu\u00e7\u00e3o da qual os clientes externos eram, simplesmente, clientes - foi popularizada pelo escritor de gest\u00e3o da qualidade Joseph M. Juran, que a introduziu na quarta edi\u00e7\u00e3o do seu Handbook .
